In 1838, the successor to Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, sent an army into Georgia to forcibly remove the Cherokee. Nearly 2,000 Cherokee died waiting in camps for the westward march. On the Trail of Tears, as known by the Cherokee, about 2,000 more died of starvation, disease, and exposure.
